(Mostly) Kirk/McCoy Recs! [07 Nov 2009|03:17pm]

Kirk/McCoy Recs
everything you had and what was left after that by [info]re_white (NC-17)
Summary: Jim learns fast that very few people get off on having a partner who can't.
The prompt for this fic is that due to psychological trauma, Jim is unable to orgasm, so... appropriate warnings here! Having said that, this fic is achingly beautiful and not something I was expecting to enjoy at ALL, but I definitely did.

Something Like a Phenomenon by [info]azephirin (girl!Kirk/McCoy, NC-17)
Summary: What it all comes down to is: They're just drunk enough.
Uh, I have a weak spot for girl!Kirk/McCoy fics. This one was hot.

Rapture by [info]shinychimera (also Kirk/OCs, NC-17)
Summary: Aliens whammy Kirk, wiping his memory, to make him think that he is a acolyte in their temple - think "holy brothel". Once Jim is rescued, Bones is the one who has to deal with Jim trying to bring him to the faith with his body, while trying to restore Jim's memories.
Warning: Consent/dubcon issues due to the whammy. Please use appropriate caution. Warnings aside, this story is really beautiful. [info]shinychimera's storytelling really taps into something visceral and powerful. Jim's POV through this is frightening and engaging.

Cowboys Lost at Sea by [info]ayalesca (NC-17)
Summary: Jim and McCoy are trapped, together and alone, in a strange world made up of their memories and desires. In a world where almost anything they want comes into existence, there is no hiding from their desires, each other, or themselves.
This is the first of the [info]startrekbigbang's I've read, and I loved it. (I knew I would because it's by Aya and she always blows me away.) This story was almost like poetry. It had this really amazing cadence that just sucked you in and made you feel like you were part of their dream-like world. It was haunting and lovely and perfect.

Asymmetry by [info]canis_takahari (R)
Summary: Leonard McCoy has already been through the dorm room politics, the awkward drunken nights, the pain and fear and grief; he didn’t expect to have to start his life over again, but Jim Kirk is making sure he does it right this time.
Everyone has to read this story. EVERYONE. I started my evangelizing on this story last night after I finished it, immediately sending it to everyone I was IMing with. I cannot begin to put into words the way this story made me feel when I was reading it. It's absolutely hilarious, breathtaking, emotional (without being overwrought), intense, playful, and basically might as well be canon as far as I'm concerned. Her Jim and Bones are perfect in every way (mostly because she remembers to include their flaws) and her dialogue is enviable. (I'm serious, last night I was talking to [info]silverlining_99 and I was like, "UGH, HER DIALOGUE IS SO GOOD, IT MAKES ME WANT TO STAB HER WITH JEALOUSY!" Yes, that is the measure of how amazing a writer you are... when other writers are green with envy over how awesome you are.) Okay, I think I'm done gushing. Maybe. OMG READ THIS STORY. Alright, now I'm done.

Step Into Liquid by [info]atomicskull (R)
Summary: This - stepping into liquid, leaving land, when the dawn is just breaking - is what matters in life, especially if you have someone to share the waves with.
The reigning queen of AUs is still going strong with this story. It's a surfer AU, y'all. What I really love about [info]atomicskull's AUs is how she still manages to bring in who they are from canon and slip them seamlessly into these other worlds. I am not the first person to say this about her AUs, either, mostly because it's true. Also, the visuals in this story are very pretty. SUNSHIIIIIINE. (You'll understand when you read it.)

The Old Space-Time Song and Dance by [info]andrealyn (PG-13)
Summary: Captain Kirk's used to getting his way. This time it involves time travel and possibly bending the space-time continuum.
You ever read those stories where just the IDEA of the story makes something tighten in your chest? Yeah, this is one of those. I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to ruin it, but it's really a wonderful read. HEARTS IN MY EYES FOR THESE TWO, OKAY?

Other Recs
See One, Do One, Teach One by [info]smutjunkie (Chris/Karl/Kirk/McCoy/OFC, NC-17)
Summary: …Bahaha. Written for [a] prompt at Sinfest v4
Um. I have no excuse for this fic. It's just really, really dirty porn. This fic is so porny it made ME blush. Y'all, I once talked about my ~feelings~ about porn on a podcast. Porn doesn't make me blush. THIS DID.

Impulsive by [info]inell (Karl/Chris, Adult)
Summary: This is probably a big mistake.
I very rarely find Chris/Karl fic that I really enjoy. This is one of those rare finds.

he's as damned as he seems by [info]pathstotread (Chapel/McCoy, PG-13)
Summary: "'Chapel,' he says, his voice remarkably steady for someone who's probably well on his way to drinking himself into a coma."
This is short (900 words) but packs a really great emotional punch. Jim is wonderful in this as well and I LOVE Carrie's Bones. Christine is wonderful, as usual.

Alright, so I know I've barely been around - I've been trying to scan LJ when I can, but sometimes you guys are insane! (I also need to pare down my groups that I don't follow so much anymore...)

Of course, although I've been reading, I haven't been writing. So here's the status of life:

We've mostly settled into the apartment. There are still boxes in the front room. But my 'office' has always been the clutter collecting room. I'm slowly making progress, although I fear we need at least one more bookshelf. And that's without even getting stuff from Mum and Dad's place. Ah well. I should probably weed through old books again at some point to see whether there's anything I should be parting with.

Work is going really well. It's refreshing to have a job that's less than 1/10th the stress of banking. It's also very weird to have far less stringent deadlines. I have to administer a nationally controlled exam in a few weeks, and I'm a bit nervous about that as it's my first time having to actually read through the directions and all, but everything is scripted, and I've already done the sitting through the exam and collecting it after bits. My boss has been very impressed with my work, as well as the fact that I've been able to make things happen - like getting a color printer and a fax within a month of my getting here. I receive high praise for the wording of my emails, and thinking ahead about things that will affect the students. There's my banking experience right there; customer service and diplomacy.

Even on days that I wake up tired and would love to get back into bed...I don't loathe the idea of going into work. I don't feel my blood pressure spike when the phone rings. As an added bonus, I'm picking up terminology and getting to sit in on lectures that are related to my psychology interests.

And because I've been taking the T in to work, I never need to worry about driving. Even on rainy days, the walk to the T isn't bad in the least - it's less than 5 minutes. I get to read for about an hour and a half a day, and as a result, since the end of August, I've torn through the Left-handed Syndrome, three Dragonriders of Pern books (it was one book that compiled three), the first two Sookie Stackhouse novels, I've been reading magazines and the local morning Metro newspaper, and now I'm reading one of my old Psychology books. Seven books in two and a half months is a good count for me.

I finished my Sessions.edu program as of last night, closing out my Graphic Design Business class with a B+ (which was my lowest grade of all my classes...but that's because I took an F on one of the 6 assignments...). YAY! MASTER'S CERTIFICATE IS DONE!!!

I found my Unjournaling book, and I think I may start using it again over at [info]lycoris_radiata. I really need to get back to writing things that aren't just [info]_dark_chaos specific.

Monday, I go to the doctor for my first visit with my new local doctor. I need to remember to make and bring a complete list of information I need to relay and questions I need to ask.

Had a great birthday. Devon got me Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and I LOVE it. I also got ice cream cake - which Dev also made :D Thank you to all who sent along birthday wishes. I daresay it was the best birthday in a while.

And with that, I think it's shower time.

FRIDAY!! [07 Nov 2009|12:06am]

I totally slept from 3 to 10 today, and it was awesome.

Hardly slept this week (and I hardly updated here for that matter), but I was catching up on school and stuff. Which is odd to say you're catching up when you just finish midterms, but I digress.

Anyhow, I'm happy that most of the shows I'm watching were on hiatus the past few weeks because I wasn't going to have any time to watch them. I haven't watch V yet, but I'll probably do that tomorrow. Or not. I don't know. Really want to do a lot of homework done and over with because I seriously don't want to do anything during Thanksgiving week, so we'll see.

Ok, off to get some food and watch a movie or something.

62. Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
63. Plainsong by Kent Haruf
64. Eventide by Kent Haruf
65. 1776 by David McCullough

ETA: In non-reading news, I bashed two of my toes on someone else's knee while sparring last night - the whole class heard the crunching sound. The tip of my ring toe is completely purple from the bruising and the girls both say it looks swollen. I'm thinking it's probably broken, ugh. I taped it to the other one today to stabilize it, and it feels a bit better.

We don't get nearly as much Fall color as other parts of the country but it's a misnomer that we don't get any.

Yesterday while I was walking da Phoebles at Kit Karson Park I snapped a few pics of some Fall leaves.

I thought I'd share a couple of the pics.

UNDER THE CUT )

I still have some pics from my trip to New Mexico I need to share - I haven't forgotten! There's just so many that I haven't gone through them all yet.

Today's been a stressful day. Lisa's having a really bad day and when Lisa has a bad day I end up having a bad day. Sigh.

[ mood | bouncy ]

Title: The Not-So-Common Cold
Author: Amber/[info]affectingly
Rating: R
Pairing: Kirk/McCoy
Summary: Bones gets a cold. Shenanigans and adorableness ensue. Also, the crew of the Enterprise is kind of ridiculous.

So, six months later, here it is. // I sort of hand-waved the medicine of this. Don't kill me. Meme! [06 Nov 2009|12:27am]

michelle_ravel
Stolen from[info]chickadilly ... the "If I were a vampire..." meme! (Post three things you would do if you were a vampire.)

If I were a vampire, I'd accidentally bite the inside of my mouth all the time with my fangs.
If I were a vampire, I don't think I'd spend any less time outside than I already do.
If I were a vampire, I would eat people I didn't like without being that emo about it.

Also, you know, when I was your age, "memes" were something invented by Richard Dawkins and LJ didn't exist.
